Woca Antique Lye has been developed to produce an aged oak finish that resembles fumed or ammonia smoked oak.
It is excellent for floors as well as smaller woodworking projects. The colour may vary after application depending on the concentration of natural tannin in the wood, as it works by reacting with tannic acid in oak to give the aged appearance.
Woca Antique Lye creates a vintage aged look and colour, the final colour is dependent on the amount of moisture and tannin in the oak and this naturally varies.
The Woca Lye is a pretreatment and does not contain pigments, it requires subsequent treatment with oil, lacquer or soap.
Preparation: You will need a brush, plastic bucket and a stick for stirring. Do wear protective clothing, particularly gloves and goggles, and avoid contact with skin and eyes. You can clean your tools with water and soap.
Application: The wood must be unfinished and well sanded. Make sure it is clean and dry before applying Woca Antique Lye. To apply an even coat of the lye, use a nylon brush and work lengthwise along the grain. You will need approximately 1 litre of lye to 10m2 of wood. Initially the wood will turn a warm dark colour, leave it to fully dry for 6-8 hours or overnight and it will dry to an aged mid brown. The surface must be completely dry before applying any further finish. If required denib any raised grain with a medium P150/P180 abrasive. Then vacuum the floor or use tack cloths on smaller areas.
Finishing: Apply Woca Diamond Oil with the white Doodle Bug Application Pad. Working in the direction of the grain, the friction created by unique pad base helps work the oil into the wood. Any excess oil can easily by removed with the Woca Polishing Cloth and the surface allowed to dry. On smaller or hard to reach areas, the Woca Hand Pad is the perfect applicator and achieves the same hard wearing finish.
